Windows 8 is the most recent Operating System from Microsoft. Though they haven’t released the final or even the beta version yet, but a developer preview is online now. If you aren’t feeling it safe to install it in your PC but from your curiosity, you are looking for a way to try it, then you can run in inside your currently installed system with VirtualBox or any other virtual program. But not all processor will support to run Windows 8 virtually. Only those processor Hardware-Assisted Virtualization Technology (HAV) supported can do this. Almost all recent processors supports this technology, but if you want to be sure then you can test your processor with a Microsoft tool called Microsoft® Hardware-Assisted Virtualization Detection Tool. Let’s check this out.

Also Check

Download the havdetectiontool.exe file from the link below and then run it.

Now it will display HAV detection results. If you see the following result, that means your PC does not have a HAV capable processor (you will not try it virtually, sorry, but hopefully you can directly install it)

Region (2)

If you see the following result, that means you have a HAV capable processor but if this feature (HAV setting) is not enabled on the processor (in the BIOS). You would need to enable the virtualization setting in the BIOS (click here to learn more)

Region (3)

And if you got the next result then congratulation! You have a HAV capable processor and it’s enabled and now you can run Windows 8 on VirtualBox (Get ready for our next tutorial about how to run it in VirtualBox).

Hopefully my PC has a HAV capable processor. I am going to show you how to try Windows 8 on VirutalBox on my next post.
