The new Metro Start UI is all about visualization, the key note in Windows 8. Although there were no options to change the Metro background in Windows 8 Developer Preview on default, users can change the Background and Colors of Metro UI in Windows 8 Consumer Preview. If you want to add some customization to the Windows 8, you can start editing the background of Metro Home screen (Start Screen). Sounds good? Then follow a few quick steps and let your computer with the Windows 8 even more beautiful.

First, we need to enter to the Metro Control Panel. There are some ways to do so, let me show you one. Open the Charms Bar (Code Name of the bar that opens on the right corner of the screen and from which you can access different areas of the system) by simply taking you mouse cursor to the bottom-right corner of you desktop or swiping your fingers from left if using a tablet. Then click on Settings.

Then click on More PC Settings from the opened right sidebar.

Now the Metro PC Settings window will open. From the Personalize, click on Start screen.

Then you will see some pre-added backgrounds under Choose a background. Select any one of them and then choose your preferred color from the Change background color for more customization.

Your Metro UI background and color will be changed then.

Although you cannot be able to use Custom Background in Metro Start Menu, this option will let you make your Metro UI as you want.
