Don't you like to keep your loved ones close to you? And when you're set at work one of the easiest ways to feel connected is to have a family portrait as your phone's wallpaper. It's one of those simple things that helps keep a lot of us sane through the torrid and troublesome working day.

Photowall Live Wallpaper takes this concept to the next level. Rather than having just one image to gaze at, it randomly shuffles photos to ensure you get a bit of variety.

PhotoWall shows your photos as your wallpaper! See an ever changing set of photos from:

  • Your phone's camera gallery
  • Your own Facebook photos
  • Your friends' Facebook photos
  • Facebook photos tagged as having you in them

It's totally free and ad free!

This version shows your photos as a pile of Polaroid's. You can upgrade to unlock more layouts and to get more photos more often. Just search for PhotoWall Upgrade, or you can do it from within this app.

The app grabs images from your phone's gallery and scatters them around the screen like discarded Polaroid's. It even adds a grainy effect to each image to simulate the passage of time, like those photos have been dug out of a long-forgotten shoebox from beneath your bed. It's a cool effect that makes the wallpaper stand out.

As well as connecting to your phone's internal gallery, Photowall Live Wallpaper also features the opportunity to link to with your Facebook account. You can have images from your Facebook album appear, as well as images taken by your friends in which you are tagged.

A bit of caution is possibly required here, as some of your mates may have tagged you in totally unrelated photos for their own twisted amusement. It's also worth noting, in the process of connecting to your Facebook account, the app is accruing data charges and consuming more battery power.

Photowall Live Paper is being distributed free of charge, but with some notable caveats. The free version only allows you to use the Polaroid-style layout, while the paid-for upgrade offers more options. You can have all of the images arranged on a wall, or have them displayed in different sizes using the 'Puzzle' choice. The final option is 'Fade', which blends images together. To be honest, the Polaroid layout is the best, although the flip effect on the 'Wall' arrangement is rather fetching.

The paid-for update also offers the ability to add effects to each image, such as sepia tone or a more vivid color balance and contrast. The differences between the free and paid-for editions of the app are less striking than you might think, and the biggest reason to hand over your cash is to remove the occasional 'Upgrade now' images that appear at random intervals in your photo stream.

What Photowall Live Wallpaper sets out to accomplish, it does so with commendable aplomb. Everything works as it should, and the cool Polaroid effect really makes your treasured snaps stand out. The biggest selling point of the app is that it frees your images from the indignity of being locked away in your phone's gallery app, and places them on full display for you and others to enjoy.

If you're the kind of person who has an SD card full of family photos, then this could be your perfect live wallpaper.
