If you are a regular PC user, the biggest question on your mind is “How to make my PC run faster?” – I am quite sure about that. That’s not an easy job at all as managing a faster system depends on many factors and failing on one will completely make no good. So, to get to know how to keep a new system fresh and fast or how to make a slower PC faster, you first need to know why the system goes slow overtime. There are real reasons behind this problem and we can’t pass the fact that whatever you do, your system is surly going to end up taking decade just to boot up. All that we can do is to keep that moment away for a further bit. In this article we will explain what are the major reasons of a slow system and sluggish PC and what basic things we can do to prevent it. So, let’s get started.
Invalid Registry Records
Every operating systems in the market accumulate various types of data and system log/records often. It has to be done to make sure the system is running properly and don’t has major effect on performance issue unless they become useless. The problem happens when a bunch of unnecessary information is being maintained for a specific operation of the system. And till now, this is one of the major problems of Windows. Frankly speaking, Windows OS stores everything we do on the computer, such as log of running programs, preferences of user accounts and customized settings for hardware components in a database – which is called the Windows Registry.
Registry is one the main and most important resource for Windows based systems and without Registry, the system won’t even start working. While using the PC, we install and uninstall applications, change settings of the system or make visual customization (known as theming). For each new activity, Windows creates a brunch of new values to store the last changes (such as, Registry Keys). However, many of the previously saved data in these records are left behind. Thus, the total space wasted for storing such unnecessary information will grow overtime, and every time you run a new command, the system needs to go through a lots of records to find the specific data you need. Consequently, the response time of your system became sluggish and makes your PC looks slower.
Fragmentation Of Files
While you install/uninstall a game or application, copy documents, move video or music files, download pictures from digital camera or even watch a movie on your computer, the operating system will constantly write and delete temporary data from from your Hard Disk. Eventually, many “empty” hole (sector) builds up on the HD because of the continuous movement of files. This is called fragmentation, as it refers to a process where Windows just segmenting the storage space inefficiently. The thousands of blank gaps left by the system makes the reading speed of HD slower, because the platform can not identify if a byte is empty or not. So, the system needs to go all the HD reading through lots of empty space.
In addition, the files are saved by Windows gets broken in time and then get allocated randomly creating a mess that also influences the recovery time of the information. This is because the system knows only the start and end bytes of each file and need to find the remaining parts of that content throughout the storage disk. Because of this, defragmentation is a key thing to keep a faster PC. Defragmentation is nothing but a process to reallocate all parts of a file in the same place so the system can find it easily. We have a separate article demonstrating more about fragmentation and why does this occurs and another post featuring best free defragmenter for Windows. You should check them out both.
Who use the Microsoft operating system are already familiar with Windows Update service which is an annoying thing for most of the users. Microsoft releases security patch and update patch (usually adding safety improvements or correcting minor flaws) regularly. However, sometimes they offers a bit more complex update with renewed feature and major changes to the system – whose are known as Service Pack.
It is indisputable that such adaptations are essential to keep your computer safe and up to dated. The problem is that all these procedures will overlap the existing files. This is another factor that makes the system real slow. In short, the more software is added to the system, more records and logs are created, new processes are started, news drivers are installed and, consumption of hardware resource goes high.
So a PC with Windows 7 base version that went through the Service Pack 1 update will never have the performance of a PC that had installed that has directly installed Windows 7 Service Pack 1. Although both PC are running the same OS, same version, same service pack as well as with the same hardware components, their performance will never match each other.
Background & On-Boot Tasks
To conclude the major reasons for a slow computer, we have to mention system resource usage. There are tons of programs that use an excessive amount of memory. Not to say about Virus, we have to use an Antivirus tool (well, you can’t live without an Antivirus tool if use internet often and share files via flash drive or optical disc). Some of these Antivirus tools operate without trying to save memory consumption. In such cases, every time you download a file, or connect a portable device, or even simply run a program - antivirus compare these files with a list of threats - which can take a long time (As antivirus tools are usually first update their database, then analyze that database, then analyze the file and finally try to find any possible threat on that file – a lots of work).
What To Do
Now, we have discussed the major reasons of a slower system. So, what you can to to prevent this. We have some articles on the queue regarding this, but to get started right now here’s some key things to do:
- Remove unnecessary programs loading with Windows bootup.
- Clean registry often with a good registry cleaner tool.
- Avoid running software in the background that you are not using.
- Perform disk defragmentation and cleanup of temporary files frequently.
- Be safe always and stay out of virus line.
The ABC Trick team always trying to find out the best tools to improve your system performance. We recommend to use Wise Registry Cleaner or Auslogics Registry Cleaner to cleanup registry errors. For defragmentation purpose, you can use IObit Smart Defrag 2 or Defraggler. Advanced System Care with Antivirus can do a complete system optimization and wipe out junk files as well.
